Matthew Wright Slams Those Ignoring Government Rules On This Morning

This Morning's Matthew Wright has slammed those who are still not listening to the government's guidelines to stay at home and branded them 'idiots'.

The broadcaster appeared via videolink from his home alongside fellow contributor Michelle Gayle as hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield discussed some uplifting stories amidst the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping the nation. 

Despite trying to keep the conversation light, Matthew, 54, called out members of the public for putting others health at risk, which forced Phil, 57, to ask him not to label everyone as 'idiots'.













Matthew began: 'It's nice to hear positive stories to counteract the idiots out there who are putting people's health at risk.

To which Phil weighed in: 'We won't label people idiots, they may have misunderstood'.

'They are putting lives at risk, they're worse than idiots, frankly,' Matthew continued. 'There were people taking advantage, taking liberties. 

'There are a lot of street drinkers out there and rough sleepers, we are being told to stay at home - what if you haven't got a home?'

Hearing Matthew's point of view, Phil, playing devil's advocate, added: 'There's every possibility that like naughty children, "I've told you these rules and if you don't adhere to these rules, you will be totally grounded".'

Matthew stressed to those at home: 'It's an attitude that has to change. 

'I've seen it by so many people on TV of trying to get away with it, thinking, "it doesn't apply to me", that attitude has to change.'

Matthew's rant comes days after prime minister Boris Johnson imposed a nationwide lockdown in a bid to reduce the spread of coronavirus.

As of Wednesday, 422 people have died out of over 8,077 COVID-19 cases in the UK, and now people are not allowed to leave their homes - with a few exceptions.

Only essential work that cannot be done at home, exercise, and picking up food or medical supplies are valid reasons to go outside. 

Weddings and social gatherings have been outlawed and all shops have been banned from opening except for those selling food and medicines. 

Sporting events, music festival and other social gatherings have been either cancelled or postponed due to the crisis.
